Hummingbird in flight, pencil study
Realism · Black and grey · Flash
A hummingbird is shown mid-flight in side view, with one wing raised above the body and the other extended to the left, and a long thin beak pointing right. The drawing uses soft graphite pencil shading with fine hatching on the feathers and gentle tonal gradients across the chest and head. The bird sits centred on a plain white background with generous empty space around it.

The hummingbird turned up the week the lane flooded and then froze over, which my father said was no weather for anything with a beak that thin. He was wrong about the bird, or at least about its stamina, which hung in the cold air beside the kitchen window as if someone had pinned it there and forgotten to take it down.

I mixed the sugar water the way Mum had taught me, one part to four, boiled and cooled in a jam jar with a blue lid. Every morning I screwed the feeder to the frame where the paint had blistered and waited. The bird came in short, impatient stops, one wing lifted over its back like a hand asking a question, the other stretched towards the barn as though it had somewhere more urgent to be. Dad watched from the doorway with his tea going cold. "Won't last till Candlemas," he said, and went back out to the tractor that still wouldn't start.
It lasted longer than Candlemas, and longer than the thaw that brought the dog's bowl back into the yard. Then one Tuesday the jar stayed full. I found the feeder swinging on its wire and a single feather caught in the frost on the sill, small as a fingernail, grey at the root and dark at the tip, fine enough that I could barely feel it on my palm.
Dad came in stamping snow off his boots and saw me holding it. He didn't say anything clever. He took the jar, filled it again from the kettle, and hooked it back on the bracket. "Just in case it's only gone to find a warmer hedge," he said. We left the kitchen light on all that week, and every morning I checked the sill before I checked the sky.
