Ornamental mandala tattoo design drawing

Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash

A detailed black ink drawing of a symmetrical ornamental design built from a central paisley-style teardrop, layered scalloped petals and feather-like shapes radiating outwards. Fine linework is combined with stippled dots that shade the edges and background, with no grey tones or colour. The design fills the centre of a white sheet, with two black fineliner pens visible at the top left.

You have the shawl across your forearms before the lorry driver has finished swearing at the barrier. Dark wool, folded the way a grandmother folds things, and when you shake it out a teardrop opens in the middle of it, pointed at the top, with scalloped petals falling away on every side. Your torch catches the dots. Someone stippled that border by hand, thousands of them, the way you might count rain.

The woman who owns it says nothing. Her papers are in order. Her son sleeps across the back seat with his mouth open. You know the rules: declared goods, the allowance, nothing that wasn't on the form. The shawl was not on the form. You hold it up to the sodium light and the feathered edges throw shadows on the tarmac that shift when you shift, like something breathing.

Pen against the clipboard, you start to write "textile, personal, undeclared", then stop. Your mother used to draw these on the backs of envelopes while the radio murmured the shipping forecast, a single drop with petals stacked beneath it, fine as eyelashes. She told you a drop was a seed that had decided to travel. You had forgotten that until now.

You fold the shawl along its old creases, corner to corner, and hand it back. "Keep it dry," you say. The barrier lifts. In your pocket the pen is still warm from your hand, and in the margin of the log you write, very small: waved through.
