Fine line black ink tattoo of ornamental script and a central symbol on the inner wrist, worn beside stacked silver bracelets.

Ornamental script tattoo on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink tattoo sits across the inner wrist, formed of a horizontal line with curling, ornamental glyphs and a central symbol. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design is set against pale skin and a dark background. Several silver bangles and bracelets are stacked on the same arm, and the composition is a close crop of the wrist.

Brother Anselm had copied the same line eleven times before the abbot came down to the scriptorium, and each time the flourish at its end had slipped a hair further from where the ink wanted it. He blew on the page. The candle beside him guttered in the draught from the cloister door, and he could hear the bell for Sext rolling over the wet fields below the walls.

The abbot did not look at the page. He looked at the ink-stained fingers that held the reed, and at the soot ground into the creases of the knuckles. "Your hand is steadier than your mind," he said. "Copy it again tomorrow. Then copy the sign the old men carved above the well, the one with the curl like a sleeping vine. Don't draw it. Learn where the lines want to go."

Anselm did as he was told for three weeks. He walked to the well at dusk, pressed his thumb to the worn stone, and traced the curls with a dry reed until the shapes no longer looked like letters but like breath. On the twenty-second evening the abbot's shadow fell across him. "Now," the old man said, "you may stop."

Anselm lifted the reed and found, to his surprise, that his hand had already finished the line. The stroke ran to a point where the vine ended and nothing else followed, and for once he did not want to fix it.
