Paw print with heart on a wrist

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small paw print tattoo with a heart outlined inside the main pad sits on the inner wrist, with the four toe pads above it. The design is drawn in a thin, consistent black outline with no shading, and the lines are clean and even. The wrist is shown against a dark blurred background, with a steel watch and a cream knitted sleeve in the frame.

Right, pull the stove nearer, because this is a winter tale and the cold gets into the telling. There was a narrowboat called the Patience that worked the Oxford canal with a collie-cross aboard named Tansy, who would not sit on the roof when the locks were coming up. She rode in the cabin with her chin on the cratch board and watched the water like it owed her money.

Now the lock at Hythe Bridge had a gate that stuck, and one February morning the keeper's girl, Sal Pemberton, came out with a torch to find the paddles frozen. Tansy went past her at a run and was gone into the dark before anyone called. We found her three hours later on the far towpath, sat square by the bottom gate, licking the ice off a bollard. Sal said the dog had been shouting at the water for a boy who wasn't there, and she was right about that, for the boy had gone through the ice a week before and nobody had thought to tell the animal.

Here's the bit you'll want. In the mud at the lock edge there were prints going down to the water and coming back, and every one of them was a proper paw. Except one, pressed deep at the very end, where the pads had closed round a little hollow the shape of a heart. Sal knelt and put her own glove in it. Some say that's just how a frozen dog stamps, others say it was the boy's hand pressing back.

Patience is still on the cut. Every February I moor her at Hythe Bridge and leave the cabin door open a crack, and I never once have needed to call the dog in.
