Always script with heart on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A small single-line script word, Always, is tattooed on the inner wrist, with the letters looping through an open heart outline. The linework is thin and even, in a single dark reddish-brown ink with no shading. Several silver bangles sit on the wrist above and beside the tattoo, and the hand is clenched against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

In the village of Harrowmere, the silversmith Ada Penrose made bangles for every bride who climbed the hill to the chapel. She made them thin enough to slide over a wrist without catching. Her father had taught her that a promise wanted a closed ring, but Ada believed a closed ring was too easy to take off. So she beat each bangle from a single length of wire and bent it into a loop that never quite met.

The spring Tomas Hale came to the forge, he was not getting married. He wanted a bangle for his mother, who had buried two husbands and kept nothing of either. He asked how a loop could hold if it never closed. Ada said a gap was where a person kept their breath. She took a fine punch, struck a single word into the open curve, and the word was Always. Tomas paid her in eggs and a fistful of hazelnuts, and he went down the hill with the silver warm in his pocket.

In autumn he came back angry. His mother had worn the bangle to wash sheets at the river, and it had slipped off her wrist and gone under the current. He stood in the forge and said the word had not held anything at all. Ada wiped her hands on her apron and told him to go and look where the bank bent under the willows. He went, and he came back with the bangle caught in the roots, still bright, the letters looping through the gap like a line through a fish's mouth.

Ada never asked for it back. She sold Tomas a second bangle that winter, for himself, and when he asked what it was for she said that was not her business. He asked whether it would hold. She told him a gap is only empty to someone who has not yet put something in it.
