The snow came over the pass on Tuesday and has not thought better of it since. The road to Gallow Cross is buried to the telegraph poles, so the carrier will not bring your nibs or the parcel of ink until the thaw. I have made do with the bottle of iron-gall you left in the scullery. It is thick and sour, but the ledger accepts it well enough.

Mrs Penhallow has taken to the back parlour with her knitting and a jar of brandy cherries, and says she will not leave it until the bells ring for Lady Day. Her nephew, the thin one with the spectacles, has been copying out the old hymn book in a neat round hand, leaf by leaf, because he says the lettering in it is the only thing in the house that has never been damp.

Last night I found that the wrought iron gate at the foot of the stair had been wound round with ivy, cut and carried in before the snow. Someone has curled the tendrils through the bars in long loops, one for each guest, I think, though I cannot say who. I left it as it was. The fire is warm, and the ledger is balanced except for one room number that keeps turning up on the wrong page.

Come when you can, but do not walk the moor road. I will keep the lamp in the window and the porridge on the hob.
