Fine line feather behind the ear
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small feather is drawn in black ink behind the ear, with its quill angled down towards the neck. The linework is fine and the barbs are shaded with short, soft strokes. The photograph is black and white, with the ear and neck filling most of the frame and loose hair at the top edge.

You climb the broken stair at Harrowmere with the tally book under one arm and the bailiff's complaint still ringing in your ears. The steward's ledger has gone missing, and the grain must be counted before the frost shuts the road to the mill. Wind comes through the arrow slits in long, cold breaths, and every third step shifts under your boot like a loose tooth.

In the solar, where the roof has fallen in and the sky sits on the beams like a lid, you find a single feather pressed into the mortar of the window seat. It is grey-brown, as long as your forearm, and someone has set its quill into the stone so it leans towards the courtyard gate. Your grandmother told you the household messengers did this: when a rider left with a letter, they pushed a feather into the wall beside the seat, and it stayed there until he rode back through the gate.
Under the seat, wrapped in oilcloth gone stiff as bark, the missing ledger waits. You open it expecting barley and oats. Instead the columns are names, and beside each name a row of tallies, marked in the steward's cramped hand. Most have a line struck through. The last entry reads, Tobias Vane, south with the fair copy, one feather set, and the line below it is blank. You count the feathers in the wall. There are eleven, and the twelfth is wedged loose in the seat, as fresh as if it were pulled this morning.
You put the ledger in your satchel and leave the grain for the frost. At the gate you press the loose feather into the stone where the others stand, and you watch it lean, waiting, towards the empty road.
