Feather tattoo behind the ear
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A small black feather is tattooed on the skin behind the ear, angled downward along the hairline. The fine, delicate linework shows the feather's central shaft and individual barbs, with soft shading along one side. The photograph is black and white and tightly framed on the ear, neck and hair, with no face visible.

Dear Maud, the scriptorium has been quiet since Brother Aldous died in the Lent frost, and I have been given the task of sorting his drawer of pens. Most are goose quills, grey and split at the nib, but at the bottom lay a single flight feather from a jackdaw, wrapped in a strip of vellum and labelled in his cramped hand: For the girl who comes Thursdays.

I did not know there was a girl. On Thursdays the carter brings flour and ink up from the village, and on Thursdays a young woman sits at the back of the chapel copying psalms for her grandmother, whose eyes are failing. Aldous taught her to cut a nib. I took it for charity. Now I think it was something more tender, and that he meant to give her this before the snow closed the road.
I walked down on Thursday with the feather tucked in my sleeve. She had not come. The carter said her father had taken her to the mill at Hexham, which is all he knew. So I sat at Aldous's desk and tried to finish the line he had left half written, a red verse about the swift that never lands. My letters came out crooked. I am no scribe as he was.
I have pinned the feather above the window, where the light falls through the barbs and the whole thing trembles whenever the door opens. Pray for us, and for the girl, whose name I never learned. Your brother in Christ, Edmund.
