Ornate colour feather on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A tall feather runs down the forearm, its vane filled with mandala-like patterns, dotted lines, zigzags and stylised yellow flower shapes. The stem curls into swirls at the base and tapers to a fine teal-blue point. Bold black outlines contain the pink, orange, yellow and teal fills, and the feather is centred on the arm against a plain skin background.

Put the kettle on, then sit, because you will want the part about the inspector's moustache before the part about the feather. This was the winter the river at Halmere froze hard enough to walk on. Mara came up the path with a bundle of coloured thread on her hip and a grey goose feather tucked under her collar, and the guard in the glass box told her feathers were not on any list, so she would have to wait while someone found one.

The inspector who came out was called Dobrin, and he had a moustache that looked like it carried its own luggage. He unrolled her cloth on the wooden counter. Inside were the feathers she had stitched all autumn, each one full of dotted lines and zigzags, round mandalas in red and orange wool, and little yellow flowers worked into the vanes like sunlight through leaves. He asked what they were for. She said they were maps of the valley where her mother was born, every zigzag a river, every flower a village that no longer appeared on the government sheets. Dobrin did not believe her. He ran a thumb along the stitches and frowned at the swirls at the base of each stem, which did not stop where they should.
Then he found the real feather, sewn into the lining. Its tip was teal, dyed by her brother on the far coast, and he held it up to the lamp for a long time. "This one is not a map," he said. "This one is a bird." Mara agreed. She told him the bird had flown further than either of them, and that a feather declares nothing but where it has been. He stamped the cloth and waved her on.
She tied the last knot on the far bank, with the blue end still poking out of her collar and the ice cracking behind her. Now the tea.
