Faceted cat and heart on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A cat's head and upper body is built from angular facets, with whiskers drawn in black lines and a solid pink heart at the centre of the chest. The shading is made of many small pastel panels in pink, lilac, green, yellow and orange, separated by bold black outlines. The design fills the centre of the frame, with a faded skeleton tattoo above and small star shapes below.

Mrs Pell kept the glazier's shop on Tanner Lane for forty-one years, and the first thing she taught me was that glass remembers every knock it has ever taken. I believed her about the glass. I did not believe her about the cat.

Tallow was a grey tom who slept on the offcut bench and regarded the workshop as his own. One wet Tuesday he walked across the lead lights of the St Brannoc window while we were out at dinner, and when we came back a small heart panel, the pink one meant for the chapel, lay in four shining pieces on the floor. Tallow sat beside them, washing a paw, looking pleased with himself.
Mrs Pell gave me until Friday to find a replacement. There was no pink like that anywhere in the county, so I raked through the crates of old scrap, pulling out lilac, green, a streaky mustard yellow and a sherbet orange. I cut them into facets no bigger than a thumbnail and set them in black lead, over and over, until the heart was a cage of tiny colours. Then I built the cat's head beside it, because the tom had stalked my bench all week and I thought he ought to be in the window too.
On Friday the vicar held the panel up to the morning light and said nothing for a long while. Then Tallow strolled in through the open door, sat exactly under the window, and the sun fell through the glass onto the flagstones in pink and green and gold, shaped like a cat and a heart. Mrs Pell wrapped the spare offcut in brown paper, pressed it into my hands and said that was mine to keep.
