Ornate elephant on upper back
Dotwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large elephant head is drawn in black ink, with its ears, trunk and tusks filled with dense decorative patterns, including scrolls, bands and mandala-like motifs. The linework is fine and the stippled dots add shading and texture across the trunk and forehead. The tattoo sits centrally on the upper back against pale skin, with a white lace top framing the lower part of the image.

You break the ice on the water trough before the light comes up, the fields around Hollin Fen gone white to the hedges. In the barn, on a bed of old feed sacks, sits the wooden elephant the travelling painter left behind last October. Its paint has worn grey along the trunk, but the patterns are still there under your thumb: diamonds banded across the ears, a rosette on the forehead that opens like a clock face.

Teodor drew the whole thing in one long afternoon while the fair packed up around him. He worked the stippling with the blunt end of a nail, dot after dot, until the grey wood seemed to have weather in it. When your aunt asked why he bothered with such fine work on a thing nobody would pay much for, he said every dot was a breath held, and that a pattern was only a way of keeping your hands busy while you waited for something to come back.
The cart went down the lane in the first frost and did not come back. The pipes froze, the lamp smoked, and on the long nights you sat on an upturned crate with a tin of cheap black ink and filled in the scrolls on the tusks where his brush had lifted early. Your fingers cracked at the knuckles. Your aunt stopped asking what you were doing.
In March the thaw ran off the roofs in a loud rush. You carried the elephant out to the yard and set it on the wall facing the lane, the way Teodor had set it, so that anyone coming up the track would see the patterns before they saw the farm.
