Vintage floral bouquet on upper back
Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo
The image shows the upper back of a woman with wavy blonde hair, wearing a white lace top. A dense bouquet of roses, a larger open bloom, small five-petalled flowers, buds and leaves sits centrally on the skin. The bouquet is drawn in fine black linework with stippled and hatched shading, and the plain pale background keeps the focus on the tattoo.

Sit closer, the fire's only good for another hour. You want to know how Ada Pringle got a bouquet of roses past the customs men at Berwick? Then listen. She had a leather case, and in it, wrapped in damp moss and wet newspaper, were forty cuttings of a rose nobody in the valley had ever seen growing. Her grandmother had drawn it, a bloom the size of a fist, its petals folded like a letter nobody had finished reading.

The officer was a thin man with ink on his cuff and a pencil behind his ear. He unwrapped the first parcel, then the second, and his face went soft the way men's faces do when they remember their mothers. "Plants are duty," he said. "Drawings are not." Ada looked at him over her spectacles and said, "Then I am carrying nothing but drawings, sir," and she opened the case and showed him the sketchbook. Every page held the same fine black lines: a rose, a peony gone loose at the edges, five-petalled blooms scattered like crumbs, buds on thin stems, leaves stippled dark where the light could not reach.
He turned the pages slowly. Somewhere near the back he found the bouquet her grandmother had drawn for a wedding that never happened, and he stopped. Ada said nothing. The lamp hissed. At last he stamped the book, closed it, and handed it back. "Mind the dew," he said, and he let her through.
