Blue floral tattoo on a shoulder
Botanical · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A cluster of large blossoms, buds and leaves in shades of blue climbs from the shoulder toward the upper arm, with a thin curling vine at the top. The shading is soft and painterly, with lighter highlights within the petals and darker blue along the outlines and leaf veins. The tattoo sits on the skin of a shoulder against a pale background, with a white lace top and blonde hair framing the right side of the composition.

Before the bells at Hallow Marsh, Anneke Vos lit the bread oven with the last of the peat and waited for the tiles to warm. The oven had been painted by her grandmother's hand, a ring of blue flowers on white glaze, peonies as fat as cabbages, buds curling at the edges like the ends of a letter. Her grandmother used to say the flowers only opened when the first loaf went in, and Anneke had thought it a thing grandmothers said until the spring her husband went out on the ice and did not come back.

She kept the bakery alone after that. Each morning she mixed the dough in the dark, kneaded it against the cold slab, and talked to the oven the way her husband had, asking it what it wanted. One February the flour ran low and the rye sat sour in its crock, and she sat on the stool and wept into her apron until a knock came at the back door. A girl stood there with a pail of milk and a face the colour of tallow, asking if the bakery had any bread for a child who had walked from the far dykes.
Anneke gave her the heel of the loaf and a cup of the milk, and the girl ate standing up. When she left, the sky over the canal had gone the grey of old pewter, and the tiles on the oven held a faint glow. Anneke swore afterwards that the blue peonies had opened a petal each, one for every crumb the girl had dropped on the step.
