Ornate elephant tattoo on an ankle
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small elephant with dense, patterned detailing fills the outline, with decorative marks across its body, head and tusks. The black ink is set against bare skin in a black and white photograph, with a beaded anklet and a bare foot in the frame. Peacock feathers fill the background, and the tattoo sits in the upper part of the frame.

You learn the patterns from your grandmother's hands before you learn your letters. Every elephant she draws on the back of a fishing net has its skin filled with small lattices, dots and curling vines, because she says a bare elephant is only a rumour of one. On your island, where the ferry comes twice a week and the peacocks wander the lanes as if they own the rain, nobody thinks an animal needs to be seen whole to be real.

Then the trader arrives from across the strait with a sack of black glass beads and a request for an elephant that does not exist on the island at all. He wants a richly patterned beast for a chest he is carving for a bride in the mainland city. You tell him you will need three days and a feather from the bird that screams loudest at dusk. He laughs, but he pays in advance with a hank of silver wire.
On the third morning you sit on the harbour wall with a pot of soot ink and the feather across your knee. The elephant takes shape slowly: first the outline, then the ears like folded sails, then the lattice you copy from the net, and last the eye of the peacock feather pressed into its flank as a dot. Your grandmother watches from her doorway, sucking a mint, and says nothing until you finish.
When you look up the trader is gone. Only a single black bead lies on the stone where he sat, and beside it, cut neatly from the wire, is a small silver elephant with no pattern at all, plain as a pebble. You understand the joke, and you leave it there for the gulls to test.
