Beauty and the Beast thigh tattoo

Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A woman wearing a dark lace skirt shows her leg, with a line-only tattoo of the Beauty and the Beast characters inside an oval wreath of roses and an open book at the top. A banner tattoo with a figure and lettering sits near the knee, and more linework is visible lower on the leg where a banner reads "THE LONELY ARE". The photograph is black and grey, with crisp outlines and soft natural light against a dry grass background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The mobile library had crossed at Carrick Bridge every second Thursday for nineteen years, and in all that time Mrs Okafor had never once asked me to open the crates. Today she did. Her driver kept both hands on the wheel while I lifted the lids on forty-two books, each wrapped in tissue paper gone soft at the corners. Under the last layer sat a rose in a jam jar of water, its petals the colour of old brass and its stem wound round with thread.

"It has to reach the reading room on the far side before the last petal falls," Mrs Okafor said, not looking at the rose. "That's the rule. The library belonged to a man who wanted his town to keep one thing that didn't wilt." I told her plants were not permitted, that the form had no box for roses, and that I would need a reason written in ink. She gave me one. It was a single line from the flyleaf of a copy of a story about a merchant's daughter, a beast in a castle, and a glass that showed the world as it was. I had read that book as a girl and had forgotten how it ended.

I stamped the form. When I reached to lift the jar, a petal came loose and settled on the counter between us, pale and perfectly still. Mrs Okafor closed the crate without comment and the van rolled off towards the far hills. I wrote on the margin of the form, Contents: forty-two books, one rose, one promise, and then I put the petal in the drawer with the rubber stamps, where it stayed for the rest of my shift, and for a good many shifts after.
