Ornate feather design in black and colour
Geometric · Mixed · Flash
A single feather drawn in bold black linework on a white background, filled with dense bands of geometric patterns, chevrons, dots and small leaf-like motifs. Accents of teal, pink and yellow ink sit within the black and white areas, and the fine stippling and repeated shapes create a detailed, symmetrical composition that tapers to a thin quill at the base.

Mind the step, that one has been waiting four hundred years to take somebody's ankle. There, sit on the fallen stone where the chapel roof used to be. You can see the sky through the window now, which is more than the old Countess ever managed.

She kept a clerk up in the north tower, a thin man called Aldous Penhallow, who wrote the household accounts with goose quills he plucked himself from the birds on the moat. Every feather he touched, he decorated, a habit he got from his mother, who wove baskets. Lines in the margins, chevrons down the shaft, little rings of ink like the eyes of watching things. By the time he finished with a quill it looked more like a map of the county than a pen.
Then the Countess sent for the ledger and found it full of pictures and no figures. She had him brought down to the courtyard. He still held one feather in his hand, the finest of them, striped in teal and rose, and he begged her to read it before she struck him. So she held it up to the light, and there the sums were, hidden in the patterns: every debt the household owed, and every debt owed to the Countess herself.
She pardoned him on the spot. The feather is still carved above the gate, its shaft pointing at the moat. Ask anyone in the village about the Penhallow ledger and they will tell you the sums are still in there, if you hold the page to the light.
