Ruth, it is twenty to four and bay two has finally gone quiet, though the drip pump still clicks every forty seconds like someone tapping a biro against a desk. I have been sitting at the nurses' station with your packet of metallic flash, the sort you press on with a damp cloth, trying to work out why the triangles on the central panels never quite line up. Every one is the same size, yet each is set a fraction off from its neighbour, so the whole row seems to lean.

Mr Adeyemi asked me at midnight whether the silver dotted border would survive a bath. I told him it would for a day or two, and he laughed and said his granddaughter wants one for her birthday on Saturday, the gold diamond band if she can have it. He wanted to know which shade she would pick. I did not know what to say, so I said gold, because gold is what children always pick.

At half past one I found him asleep with the sheet open on his blanket, one hand flat over the diamonds as if he were keeping them from blowing away. I did not wake him. I counted the dots in the border instead, two hundred and twelve of them, and wrote the number on the back of his chart.

Dawn is coming in grey through the blinds now and the foil is catching it. The silver dots look like a field of very small moons. I will leave the sheet where he can find it. Tell Ruth the spare triangles are on the sluice shelf, and that I have kept the copper one for myself. Love, Jo.
