Polynesian sun and tribal sleeve design

Black and grey · Flash

A black and grey drawing of a tribal design, with a radiating sun at the top above a flower-like centre and a row of spirals. Below, sweeping bands of chevrons, triangles and curled motifs fill a tall, rounded panel. Fine hatching and pencil shading give the piece depth against the plain white background.

The frost has laid itself over everything these grey weeks, every hurdle and wire furred white, and the water trough had a lid of ice you could have skated on. Mum says we should count the days to the solstice on the back of the feed sacks, so I have been scratching marks in pencil. Forty-one to go now. Dad says the light is no longer getting longer because the clocks have not changed, but I have seen it with my own eyes, lying along the furrows like something poured.

Hamish's dog found a lamb under the hedge on Tuesday, cold as a stone but still breathing. I carried it in against my coat and it took the bottle as if it had been waiting all its life for something warm. Its mother had gone under the wall in the blow, and I did not have the heart to tell Dad what we both knew he would find in the spring.

Stay where you are if the coast suits you. I only wanted you to know the sun got over the wall this morning, and I stood in it with my face up like a daft thing until my fingers stopped working. Write back when the post gets through the drift. Your loving sister, Ada.
