Ornate feather design in teal and red

Dotwork · Mixed · Flash

A tall feather is drawn in detailed black linework, with its vanes filled with swirls, paisley-like curls and small dots. The upper vanes are shaded in teal and blue, and a lower section is filled with red, while the rest stays cream and black. Small dots and leaf shapes scatter around the edges on a plain off-white background.

Ada Wren kept the lamps at Coldharbour Halt and had done since her father's hands got too stiff for the levers. The last northbound never stopped, but on the night the fog came up off the marsh it slowed at the platform edge, and a man stepped down with a rolled canvas under one arm and a long feather tucked behind his ear. The quill was black, the vanes striped in teal and rust, and he held it out to her as if it were a ticket.

"The line runs where the feather points," he said. "It has run that way since the cutting was dug, and nobody has thought to ask it." Ada had her doubts. She had seen tracks lead nowhere and signals drop their arms for no one. But the fog sat thick on the rails and the telegraph had been dead since Tuesday, so she took the feather and turned it slowly on her palm. The vanes shifted, dotted with tiny gold points, and the curls along them seemed to unwind toward the north.

She rang the bell for the stationmaster's hour, lit the green lamp and sent the signal up. Far off, something answered with a whistle. The stranger touched his hat and walked onto the empty platform, and when the fog thinned at dawn there was only his canvas on the bench, unrolled, painted with the same swirls and red plumes in a hand she did not know.

Ada kept the quill in the drawer beside the ticket punch. On windy nights off the marsh, she said, the vanes hummed and pointed north, and nobody on the platform argued with them.
