Ornate feather tattoo design
Dotwork · Mixed · Flash
A long, upright feather is drawn with dense, intricate linework, filling each barb with swirls, scrolls and fine patterns. Stippled dots and small sprigs scatter around the feather, and a few sections are coloured in teal, blue and deep red. The composition is centred on a plain white background, shaped as a tall vertical design.

The kingfisher has been working the bottom pond since March, and by now you have stopped pretending you are not watching for it. Mrs Ashdown at the lodge says a kingfisher on the water means a good year. You say nothing. You are kneeling in the wet border with a trowel in one hand and a feather in the other, the strangest thing you have dug up in forty years of this garden. It is blue at the tip, green along the quill, and rust-red near the base, as though three birds had moulted into one.

In the potting shed you lay it on the bench between the seed packets and the jar of twine. Under the lamp you can see that every barb is inked with fine scrolls, paisley curls and tiny stippled dots, as if someone had patiently decorated a letter to you and then let the wind carry it off. A sprig of thyme has caught in the vane. You brush the soil from its shaft and think of your mother, who could never leave a blank page alone.
You walk the hedgerow until the light goes orange, looking for the nest the feather must have come from. You find nothing but hawthorn and a robin scolding from the wall. So you do the only thing that seems right and push the feather into the thorns at the height of your shoulder, quill first, the way you would plant something you hoped would take. By morning the wind has moved it an inch. By the weekend, a small brown bird has been seen picking at the same branch, and you decide it is not your business to say which of you is the gardener.
