The brass die had been cut for a lily, and the lily had to go. Marcel Duval turned the blank under the lamp, squinting at the three petals his father had sunk into it twenty years before, and said the inspectors would be at the works by Thursday. Pierre, who was fifteen and had never been allowed near the good chisels, asked what they would do if they found it.

"They will find a leaf," Marcel said. "Hold the plate steady."

He showed the boy how to take the outline of each petal and fill it with curls, the tight spirals a vine makes when it has nothing to climb. Pierre worked the burin until his wrist ached, scrolling the central blade into a stem and looping the side petals into tendrils, until the lily dissolved into an ornament anyone might have drawn. The band across the middle he cut as a bundle of cord, the kind a baker uses to tie loaves, and when he finished he could not find the flower himself without counting the points.

The inspectors came on the Thursday and turned the stamp over twice. One of them held it up to the window, frowned at the filigree, and asked why a foundry would waste so much effort on a leaf. Marcel shrugged and said the customers liked things to look expensive.

That night Pierre took the old plate out of the drawer and laid it beside the new one. The lily was still there, under the curls, clean as a secret. He wrapped it in oiled paper and put it at the back of the drawer, where someone could find it again once they were trusted with their own name on a bell.
