Sea turtle with hibiscus flower design
Colour · Flash
A stylised sea turtle viewed from above, drawn as a solid teal silhouette with white negative space. A white hibiscus flower with a small bud sits centred within an oval shell panel. Bold tribal-style patterns fill the flippers and head, with clean, even edges and no shading.

The hibiscus came off the crate of oranges on the third morning, crushed flat under a boot, and you spent an hour on the foredeck coaxing its petals back into shape with a bucket of river water. Nobody aboard the Marigold had seen a flower that bright in a freight yard. Ossie Quayle, the bargemaster, grumbled that anything carried aboard that couldn't swim was bad luck, then snipped a bud from it and wedged the stem in a jam jar behind the wheelhouse glass anyway.

Upriver the water ran the colour of strong tea and the reeds rattled like dry paper. Ossie's late wife had painted the wheelhouse door years back, a green sea turtle with a white flower set in its shell, and she had told him it would keep them pointed toward the coast. You never believed her. Each evening you rubbed the turtle's flippers with your thumb, the paint worn smooth in two places, and listened to the engine knock out its tired rhythm against the cold.
At Stanbridge lock the keeper's boy ran alongside and shouted that the tide was making early and the sluice would close within the hour. Ossie swore, spun the wheel, and for once did not argue when you took the tiller. The river widened into mud and gulls, salt crept into the air, and the jar on the sill tipped over with a crack of glass you did not stop to mend.
By dusk the Marigold was riding the swell past the last buoy, and the hibiscus bud had opened fully in the spray. Ossie stood at the rail, cap in hand, and said nothing at all. You unscrewed the lid of the jar and let the petals go, white against the dark water, and watched them drift out ahead of the bow, going the same way the painted turtle had always been facing.
