Ornate frame tattoos in black and grey

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The collage shows three views of black and grey tattoos framed in ornate Baroque-style borders. One tall panel on an arm frames a seated woman with a small bird and flowers, another shows a skull inside an oval frame with roses and a hanging rosary, and the third shows an empty oval frame on a thigh. The work uses fine shading and detailed scrollwork, with the arrangement of the three photos placed side by side.

The mirror had hung in the Vicarage hall since before the war, and nobody in Hollin Cross could remember a day when its silver had not been speckled with age. Mrs Pargeter kept it dusted and would not let the boy near it. When the vicar's daughter Edie came home from London with a trunk of sheet music and a nervous laugh, she stood before it for a long while and said the frame looked like something that had been waiting.

The skull was found in the vestry the spring after the flood, lying in a tin box with a rosary wound round its jaw. Nobody could say whose it was. Edie took it to the glass and turned it so the roses in the carved border caught the light, and the old men in the lychgate said that was a foolish thing to do with a dead woman's bones.

She hung the skull where the mirror had been. The mirror went up into the attic beside the trunk. Every evening after that, Mrs Pargeter heard Edie humming a tune to the bare wall, and every morning the mirror's blank oval in the attic had a little more dust on its face, as though something had been wiping it clean in the dark and then thought better of it.

In October the rosary was found on the stairs, coiled neatly on the third step. Edie was never seen again in Hollin Cross, though her trunk was still there, and the frame in the attic, when they finally carried it down, had nothing in its centre but a clean white circle of light.
