Lace back piece with roses and butterflies

Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo

A large back tattoo combines black lace-pattern ornament with two realistic roses shaded in grey. Teal and red butterflies sit among the scrollwork, with one red butterfly lower on the right. The black linework is dense and detailed, while the roses use soft grey shading and the butterflies add the only strong colour.

Sit closer, you, where the lamp can reach. No, the ghost train can wait, it has waited since 1952. Hollins Green fair, the summer the big wheel lost a bolt, and at the back of the field, past the toffee apples, a woman called Ada Crane sold lace by the yard. Her roses were the talk of the ground. She stitched them into collars and cuffs in grey thread so soft you could not tell if the petals were lit from the front or the back, and the gentlemen from the council tent bought them for their wives without asking the price.

The lace was black, every inch of it, dense as a midnight hedge. Tobias Wren, who ran the coconut shy and had hands like wet bread, came every evening to watch her bobbins clatter. He asked why she made the pattern so dark. Ada tapped the pillow with a pin. Lace is only holes, she said, held together by thread. The black is where the light gets through. Then she lifted a jam jar from the trestle and let out three moths, teal as a kingfisher, which circled the lamp and settled on the scrollwork as though they had been waiting for a pattern to land on.

The fair moved on in September. Tobias was given a bobbin and a pricking card and told to practise on the back of his own coat until the holes came true. He never saw Ada again. Some years later a pattern arrived in the post with no return address: a lace back, two roses, a heart of tangled curls, and in the lower corner one butterfly inked in a red no fairground ever carried. Tobias pinned it to the wall above his bench and, for the first time, understood why she had wanted the dark parts left dark.
