Peony and rose thigh tattoo in black and grey
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two large peony blooms, one above the other, with a smaller rosebud and several leaves trailing down the outer thigh. The petals are drawn with fine, detailed linework and soft grey shading that gives the flowers depth and volume. The image is black and grey throughout, with a woman's hand resting on a patterned skirt at the top of the frame and a plain brick background.

Corran's Travelling Marvel had three wagons left by the autumn the lions died, and the bearded woman had taken to sleeping in the big top because it was the only place the damp could not reach. Nell Ashdown kept the peonies. She had carried a box of root stock from her grandmother's garden in Lincolnshire, wrapped in wet sacking, and planted it in a tin bath behind the caravan, where the sun reached for an hour before the hills took it.

The first year they gave nothing but leaves. The second year a single bloom opened the size of a fist, heavy and grey-white as cloud before rain, and the ringmaster, Dorrit Vane, came out in his shirtsleeves to look at it. He said a flower that size would draw a crowd in any market town. Nell said it would draw nobody at all if they did not eat first. He laughed, then went back to counting coins that were mostly foreign.
By the third summer the show was playing to a field full of crows and two children from the village, who came for the rosebud Nell had coaxed out of the bramble on the fence. Dorrit sold the last horse in September. On the night before they were to fold, he found Nell on the wagon step with a blunt knife, cutting the spent heads off the peonies one by one.
"You'll kill them," he said.
"They're finished for the year. Cut them back and they come again."
He sat beside her and watched. When the last bloom dropped into the tin, it was nearly dark, and the big top stood empty against the sky like an upturned bowl. "Keep them," he said at last. "Take them wherever you go. People will pay to look at something that keeps coming back." Nell lifted the tin onto her knee and found the next bud already swelling green under the leaves.
