Red roses with black lace on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
Two red roses with soft shading and highlights sit at the top of the design, layered over a black lace pattern with scrolls and dotted pearl-like beads. Thin black chains with a small anchor and heart charm hang down the lower part of the leg. The roses use shades of pink and red, while the lace and chains are solid black, and the composition runs diagonally down the thigh.

The pricking card had been punched so many times that the Honiton pattern showed more holes than paper, and Ada had three days to fill it. Mrs Vosper wanted her daughter's veil finished by Saturday, pearls at every scroll, and the lace was still a hand's width short at the hem. Ada worked the bobbins by the window where the light lasted, the thread sliding through her fingers in the old rhythm, cross and twist, cross and twist, while the kettle went cold on the range behind her.

Her brother Sam had come home on the Tuesday with salt in his hair and a chain wound twice around his wrist. It ended in a brass anchor no bigger than a barleycorn and a small heart that would not open. 'Bought it off a Genoese boy in Cardiff,' he said, 'for a shilling and a lie about it being silver.' He dropped it on the pillow beside her. She had meant to sew it into something, a hem or a sleeve, anything to keep it near. Instead she threaded it through a loop of the lace, where it hung like a plumb line.
The roses came from the garden behind the Vosper house, cut that morning and sent along with the fitting. Ada pinned two of the best to the pillow so she could copy their folds, the outer petals heavy and wine-dark at the edges, the inner ones pale as the inside of a shell. She could not get the shadows right. Each time she tried, the thread went wrong and she unpicked it, until the lace grew a new bloom in the corner that nobody had drawn.
On Friday night Sam knocked, dripping from the dock, and found her still awake. She held up the veil. He looked at the rose and the chain for a long time. 'It's a sea map,' he said at last, 'if you squint.' She laughed, and the bead she had been holding rolled off the pillow onto the floor, where it caught the lamplight once and was gone.
