Infinity symbol with flowers on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows an infinity symbol drawn in black linework, with ornamental scrolls curling outward from each loop. Small blue and red flowers and green leaves sit along the scrolls, with the flowers placed at the crossing point and on each side. The image is a close, evenly lit photograph against a dark background, with the black linework dominant and the colour limited to the florals and leaves.

Dear Nell, the lock at Hatherby has finally started to hold water again, though the gate still groans like an old dog every time I turn the paddle. Your mother would have laughed at me, standing in the rain with a bent windlass, swearing at a bit of ironwork the way she used to swear at the kettle. I found your brooch in the lockside mud on Tuesday, the little blue enamel one with the loose pin. I have put it in the tin on the shelf above the stove, next to the tide tables and the box of spent matches.

The barge Wren Alice came through this morning with a family aboard, two boys sitting on the coal hatch and a girl painting the rail with a brush bigger than her hand. The woman at the tiller asked me whether the canal ever really ends, or whether it just loops back on itself past the mill and the sluice and the willows. I told her it loops, and that the loops are the point. She laughed and said that was the most honest thing anyone had told her since Birmingham. I think she meant it kindly.
I have been walking the towpath every evening, following the bend where the water doubles back on itself, the place where the path crosses the old footbridge and you can see the reflection of the trees make a second pair of trees. Your mother always said that was where the canal turned into a figure eight. I used to tell her the figure eight was only a number that had given up. Now I think she was right, because I keep coming back to that crossing, and the flowers that grow along the bank there are blue and red, the same as the brooch.
Come down in the spring and we will take the cruiser through the locks together, the way we planned. I will let you work the bottom gate. Bring your gloves, and do not wear the good coat.
Your loving uncle, Tom
