Ornate horned mask with rope on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A realistic tattoo of an ornate mask with curling floral filigree across the forehead, long curved horns rising above it, and a coiled rope hanging from the lower face. The shading is smooth and detailed, with strong highlights on the mask and deep shadows around the horns and folds. The design fills the forearm, with the mask centred and the horns running up toward the elbow.

You arrived at Mrs Haskell's boarding house in October with one trunk and a carving knife wrapped in oilcloth. She charged you by the week, the way she charged everyone, and never asked what you did for money. Your room is at the top of the stairs and faces the harbour. Above the wardrobe hangs the skull of a mountain goat, its horns long and pale as bleached driftwood. You were told not to touch it, because it belonged to her husband, who rowed out past the breakwater one February and did not come back.

You work at the sill under the gull-light. A commission has come from a theatre in Ramsgate: a mask for a revival, filigree across the brow like frost on a railing, horns that must curve up toward the lamps. Each evening you cut the same scroll a little finer. Mrs Haskell brings tea at six and stands in the doorway, studying the half-finished face. She says nothing about the coil of hemp you keep on the sill, though she dusts around it every morning.
On the last night of the month she sets the ledger on your table and opens it to a page with your name at the top. Below are six weeks of figures in pencil, all crossed out, and one line in her small hand: paid in full. "He carved his own," she says. "Took him a winter. The sea took it in the end, along with him." You look at the horns on the wall, then at the mask, and see that the face you have been shaping has her husband's jaw.
You finish at dawn. The rope you hung from the mask's chin is still coiled on the sill, and the tide is coming in under the harbour wall, slow and deliberate. You leave the mask on the table for her and go down the stairs carrying only the oilcloth knife, which is all the rent you ever owed.
