The lock at the back of the Pennant Road fair had rusted shut the summer Dilys Harrow came to mind the rides. Nobody had opened the old cabinet in forty years, and the showman, a man called Ambrose Tull who smelled of diesel and peppermint, said it held nothing but grease and mice. Dilys did not believe him. Every evening, when the generator coughed itself quiet, she sat on an upturned crate and listened to the cabinet tick as the night air cooled it.

She found the key in the bottom of a tin of raffle tickets. It was longer than her hand, gold gone brown at the edges, with a bow shaped like a bell flower and a bit cut in a pattern of little crosses. Round its shaft someone had wound a length of teal silk ribbon, faded where the sun had reached it, and tied it at the top in a loop that never quite closed. She carried it across the field in the dusk and pressed the bit into the lock. It turned with a sound like a cough.

Inside the cabinet there was no grease and no mice. There was a folded programme for a fair that had never opened its gates, and a photograph of a girl in a teal ribbon standing beside a carousel horse, laughing at whoever held the camera. Dilys turned it over. On the back, in pencil, someone had written: Keep the key, and let the ribbon run out on its own. She tied the silk tighter around her wrist, and went to tell Ambrose the lock was open.
