Grumpy cat in gold frame on thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A scowling grey and cream cat with large blue eyes and a pink nose sits in an ornate gold frame on the thigh. The bold black outlines and smooth colour fills are framed by teal panels, with a gold banner at the base bearing the word No. The tattoo fills most of the frame, with the cat centred and the leg and denim shorts visible around it.

The first frost came to Hollin Farm on a Tuesday, and you took one look at the yard, its puddles skinned with ice, and sat down on the back step as if it had personally offended you. Mrs Abernethy in the farmhouse called you Duchess, Tom from the lower field called you Sour Lemon, and you answered to neither, only to the tin of pilchards she rattled at dusk.

Every morning the offers came. Tom wanted you in the barn among the hay bales, where the rats were the size of your head. Mrs Abernethy wanted you on the warm rail of the Aga. You said no to the barn with a flattened ear and no to the rail with a slow blink that meant you had heard her and would not be moved. Once you even refused the pilchards, and the whole yard went quiet, as though the weather itself had paused to see what you would do next.

The turn came when the lambing shed flooded in January. Tom waded in at three in the morning with a torch clamped in his teeth, and you were already there, perched on the upturned feed bin, watching the water climb to the second rung of the ladder. You did not move for him. You stared at the ewe in the straw, then at the lamb that had slid out wet and still, then back at Tom, as if to say, not like this.

Tom rubbed the lamb with straw until it coughed. Afterwards Mrs Abernethy wrapped you in her good tartan blanket and you allowed it, grumbling, eyes narrowed against the lamp. Spring came and went, and you still would not leave the back step, and nobody in the farmhouse had the nerve to ask you to.
