Ornate lace-style underbust tattoo
Fine line · Ribs · Mixed · Photo
A close crop of a torso showing a symmetrical ornamental design in black linework, with a central panel, scalloped bands and small dotted drops hanging below. The lines are fine and even, and the design is mostly black with solid, clean outlines and no heavy shading. A dark crop top is tied above the tattoo, and a partial colour tattoo is visible at the left edge of the frame.

The pattern was still warm from the lamp when Ada Pinnock lifted it from the pricking board and held it to the window. Light came through the pin-holes in neat rows, so the design looked like frost on a pane. Mr Harcourt had asked for a copy of the old Honiton collar, the one with the central lily panel and scalloped bands falling away either side, and she had given him exactly that, a fortnight late and every hole in place.

He came down from the shop at seven, coat over his arm, and found her with a fresh sheet of card already laid out. "Those are the drops from the Dorset bodice," he said. "Why have you added a row?" She had not meant to. Her fingers had simply wanted one more point below the lily, one small hanging thing that would catch a candle. The bride in Bristol would never know who made it, only that the veil moved differently when she turned.
"It's a pattern," Ada said. "Patterns are allowed one mistake." He laughed and said he would not tell the customer. She pinned the card to the wall above the bobbins, where the older sheets had gone the colour of weak tea over thirty years, and wound the thread onto the cushion.
The veil went north by coach at the end of the month. Ada never saw it worn, but the shop girl wrote that the last dotted drop swung against the bride's dress as she came up the aisle, and that nobody could say why it made them smile. Ada kept the card. Somewhere in its punched holes one row was hers, and nobody needed to know which.
