Ornate lion head design in red linework
Neo-trad · Colour · Flash
A lion's head faces forward with a ring held in its open mouth, and a decorative bloom sits at the top of its brow. Scrolling filigree and curling flourishes frame the head and extend outward to either side. The drawing uses fine red linework and light hatching on a cream background, with no shading in other colours.

The lion has refused the ring for three evenings now, so on the fourth you stand under the canvas with a tin of cold tea and a box of gold-painted hoops, and you tell yourself it is only a matter of timing. Cassius watches you from the back of the cage with the flat patience of an animal who has outlived his fashion. The banner above the ring still shows him as he was in 1952, mane combed out into curling scrolls, a brass bloom pinned to his brow, jaw clamped on a hoop as though he had caught the whole night and meant to keep it.

Mrs Lusk has sold the wagons to a scrapyard in Wrexham. The big top comes down on Saturday, and the only thing she asked you to save was the old lion act, which she says the council will not pay to insure any longer. You remember how he took the ring from your father's hand when you were six, gently, the way a man might lift a biscuit from a child's fingers. Nobody had to tell you then that the lion was the one in charge.
You crouch by the bars with the hoop held out at the level of his nose. For a long moment he does nothing. Then he rises, unhurried, and takes the ring between his teeth with a sound like a door swinging shut. He does not give it back. He lowers his great head onto his paws, the gold ring still in his mouth, and closes his eyes.
You leave him there. At the gate you look back and see the light from the single bulb catching the brass bloom on his brow, bright as something that has finally been paid for.
