Snarling three-eyed wolf with dagger and foliage
Neo-trad · Mixed · Flash
A snarling wolf with bared fangs and a third eye on its forehead is the central subject, with a dagger running across the top of the head and a dagger blade rising from the bottom edge. Bold black linework outlines the fur, whiskers, leaves, berries and stems, while red pencil shading adds depth to the face and fur. The composition fills an upright sheet with the wolf's head centred and foliage framing both lower corners.

Dear Maureen, The lift in Hallam House has been stopping short of the fourteenth floor again, and the council men say it is the cables, so I went up the shaft myself because nobody else would. Between the landings there was a wolf sitting on the service ledge, grey gone to rust in the torchlight, its ruff full of seed heads and bramble. Above its nose a third eye sat open and unblinking, and a dagger lay across the crown of its skull as neat as a hair slide. I should have run. Instead I held out my flask lid, which is what Dad would have done with a strange dog.

It did not want the flask. It looked at the lift counterweight, then at me, then down the stairwell where a second blade stood up out of the concrete like a cold chisel, its point rusted to a dark stain. Mrs Okafor from fourteen came out in her dressing gown when she heard me talking to myself and said the berries on the stairwell plants had been coming in through the cracks since her husband passed, and that the wolf only shows itself to people who have stopped looking for the way down. I told her that was daft, and she agreed, and we both went on looking.
In the end it took the dagger's grip in its teeth and pulled, slowly, the way you draw a cork. The blade came free with a sound like a zip. Then it lay down on the ledge with its chin on its paws and let me pass. I came down the cables hand over hand and found the lift working when I reached the ground, and I have not touched a single bolt since. I keep the bent key in my top pocket. Come for Sunday dinner and I'll show you. Your loving brother, Dennis
