Black ink drawing of a symmetrical mandala tattoo design with a central eight-point star, swirls and stippled diamonds, shown on paper with no body placement.

Mandala design with stippled diamonds

Geometric · Black and grey · Flash

A hand-drawn black ink mandala design on pale paper, built around a central eight-pointed star with a dotted centre. Radiating petals, scrolls and dotted lace edging extend outward, ending in stippled diamond shapes and a long squiggled line rising from the top. The linework is fine and even, with shading created by dense stippling inside the diamonds and the petal shapes.

The lamp in the bus shelter at Carrow Cross had been out since March, so Ines waited in the dark with her hand flat on the cold bench and counted the stars through the gap in the roof. Eight points, her grandmother used to say, the old sky-map pinned above the stove. Every star a door, and every door a road you could take if you knew the right word for it. Nobody had ever told Ines the word. She had only the map, folded soft as cloth in her coat.

A van came up the hill with its headlights off, which was the first strange thing. The driver leaned out, a woman with paint under her nails and a squiggle of silver wire wound around one wrist. She asked if Ines was going east or west. Ines said she didn't know. The woman laughed and said that was the right answer, because east and west were only for people who had already decided what they were running from. She opened the back doors. Inside, the floor was covered in pale paper, and on the paper were stencils of diamonds, each one stippled dark as a night with a thousand small points of ink.

They drove until the road narrowed to a line of dots, and the woman showed Ines how to press a pin into each diamond and trace it back to its centre. Every star she followed brought her to the dotted hub of the next. By dawn the van had stopped at a crossroads with no signpost, and the sun came up through the map's own pattern, throwing lace across the tarmac. Ines stepped out. The road ran straight ahead, fine and even as a drawn line, and she walked it without looking back at the van, which had already become a small black diamond on the horizon.
