Ornate mandala tattoo on a shoulder
Dotwork · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A large symmetrical mandala sits across the shoulder and upper arm, built from a central flower surrounded by scrolling, heart-shaped and teardrop motifs. The linework is fine and dark, with stippled dotwork shading along the outer edges and softer grey tones in the centre. The design is shown in black and grey against pale skin, with the subject's hair and dark clothing visible at the edges of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Your aunt Morwenna has been unpicking the same tablecloth since Easter, and by the Thursday before the wedding the kitchen table is covered in pale threads like spilt milk. You have been sent for the iron, the good scissors and the tin of pins, and told twice not to touch the lace until she says so. Upstairs your cousin Ffion is insisting that her veil be pinned to a scrap of tulle that nobody else believes will hold.

Morwenna's pattern is a ring of heart-shaped leaves folded round a single flower, copied from a doily her mother carried over from Penzance in a shoebox. She says the hearts are for the couple and the teardrops are for the people who could not come. You count them as she works: eleven teardrops, one for each name on the card by the church door, and then a twelfth she has left blank in the lower point of the design.
When you ask whose name goes there, she tells you to hand her the small scissors and says nothing for a while. The cloth is pressed flat on the dresser with a tea towel over it, and the iron ticks as it cools.
On the morning, the church hall smells of floor polish and cut flowers. You and Morwenna lay the lace across the trestle table, and the sun through the high window finds the centre flower and throws its shadow down the length of the cloth. Ffion comes in, hair half pinned, and stops. Her shadow falls across the blank teardrop and sits there exactly, as if it had been waiting for a hand.
