Paisley heart tattoo on the shoulder

Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A heart filled with dense, symmetrical paisley and swirl ornamentation sits on the upper back near the shoulder blade. The design is built from fine, even linework and small dotted details, with soft shading giving the ink a slightly lighter tone in places. The image is a close, slightly angled view of the skin, with a pink and green floral fabric behind the subject.

Mind the step, the flags are glassy this time of year, and sit where the heat from the range can reach your knees. No, the big chair. Old Aggie never let anyone else have it, and I'm not going to start now that she's gone.

Aggie had a shawl she wore every January, when the lambing was done and the snow sat on the top field for a week at a time. It was a grey wool thing, heavy as a wet dog, and across the back of it she'd worked paisley in indigo thread, the teardrop shapes curled over on themselves like ferns that couldn't decide which way to grow. She'd learned the pattern off a Scotch peddler's wife in 1931, or so she said, and she'd never once drawn it down on paper.

The winter the beck froze solid and the ewes were stuck in the low pasture, Aggie walked out with a lantern and the shawl over her head. She came back at dawn with nine ewes and a rope burn across her palm, and she sat by this very range saying nothing for an hour. Then she took her needle and a skein of blue and started a heart in the middle of the back, filling it with the same curling shapes, dotting each little hook with a stitch no bigger than a seed.

Ask her why a heart, and she'd say the heart was the only shape that held the rest of the pattern in. That's all I know. Off you go to bed now.
