Ornate mandala tattoo on a thigh
Blackwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A large ornamental tattoo covers the outer thigh, with a radiating mandala of spiked motifs at the top and a circular central medallion. Below, scrolling filigree, lace-like geometric panels and rows of small circles flow down the leg, with a few dark dots at the lower section. The work is rendered in black and grey, with fine line detail and solid areas used for contrast against the skin, and the photo is taken at a slight angle on an outdoor deck.

The snow had sealed the pass for nine days, and Mabry Tull, landlady of the Grey Hart, had run out of patience before she ran out of firewood. She kept the kitchen warm and her temper cold. Every guest got a bowl of barley and was told to set their boots by the hearth and keep their mouths shut about the weather.

The stranger came on the ninth night, a lace-maker with no luggage but a roll of waxed linen and a pair of steel hooks. He asked for no room, only a corner by the window. By morning the frost on the glass had grown into rings and spikes, a sun of fern-fronds with a round hole at its centre, and Mabry's children ran to see it before the wind could rub it out.
Mabry wanted it kept. She offered him the cellar, the good cheese, her late husband's boots. He said a pattern that stays is no pattern at all, and he sat by the fire instead and worked on her apron, pricking a row of tiny circles along the hem with a hot needle until it looked like a scatter of seed pearls. When the thaw came he was gone, and the apron went into the drawer with the spoons.
The next winter the snow came early and the inn filled again. Mabry's youngest, Tessa, took the apron out to show a carter and found the centre circle gone dark, as if someone had pressed a coal to it. Outside, the frost had drawn the same sun on the glass, and beneath it, in the shape of a small blank medallion, a door that nobody had built.
