Dreamcatcher side piece in fine line
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A long black linework design follows the curve of the side of the body, from near the top of the torso down toward the thigh. The central motif is a dreamcatcher with a woven web and hanging feathers, framed by flowing vine-like lines, small diamond and cross motifs, and a stylised flower at the top. The lines are thin and even on pale skin, with no colour and no shading, and the photograph is taken against a dark, blurred background.

The net loft smelled of tar and damp wool the winter Aunt Nell finally let me tie my own hoop. I was eleven and my knots were lumpy, so she unpicked them with her teeth and laughed at me until I laughed too.

Everyone in Porthgarrow hung a catcher over the bed once a boat was out past the breakwater. Nell said it caught the bad dreams before they reached the sleeper, and that the feathers were for the gulls, who had seen worse. We wove ours from the spare twine of the drift nets, knotting diamonds into the places where the mesh had torn, and by spring the whole loft was full of little hoops, each with its tail of grey feathers swinging in the draught from the door.
When the Marigold went down off the Scillies in March, Nell did not come to the quay. She sat in the loft with her hands in her lap and a half-finished web across her knees. I found her there at dusk. She had run a vine of twine right round the rim, curling out past the edge like a fern, and she had tied the last feather on herself.
'Finish it,' she said. So I did, badly, my knots as lumpy as ever, and I hung it above the door where the sea wind could reach it. It still turns there. Some nights I swear the feathers stir before anyone else in the village has heard the wind change.
