Ornate moth on the back of the neck

Traditional · Neck · Mixed · Photo

A close view of the back of a neck, with hair pulled up above the tattoo, showing a moth with patterned wings and two leaf shapes above its head. The bold outlines and dotted decorative detail on the wings are typical of traditional work, with soft grey shading inside the forms. Pale cream and faint warm pink tones sit alongside the grey, and the design is centred below the hairline.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The moth had been circling the lamp above Platform Two since dusk, and when you rolled down the shutter of the lost property office it was already inside, opening and closing its patterned wings against the glass as if checking a ledger. Mr Ashdown at the ticket hatch swore it was the same moth that had come in last September. You doubted it. Moths do not keep appointments.

Lost property at Crossgate Junction holds whatever people leave behind without noticing: a child's left welly, three umbrellas, an order of service folded into quarters, a tin of barley sugar gone soft in the heat. You keep them in numbered cardboard boxes on steel shelves, and on Fridays you sit with the ledger and write each one down in pencil. The moth settles on the spine of the book, on the page for a brown leather glove that has been on shelf nine for eleven months, and stays there while you work down the column.

Nobody has claimed the glove. You meant to send it to the charity shop in Hebden on Monday. Tonight the moth lifts from the page and drifts to the glove, landing on the cuff where the cream and grey markings look almost like stitching, and it does not leave when you reach for it. You carry the glove and the moth together to the hatch, and you pass the bench where Mr Ashdown is asleep over his crossword, and you open the window onto the empty platform.

In the morning the shelf is bare where the glove was. The ledger has a new line in the claimed column, in handwriting you do not recognise, and beside it someone has drawn two small leaves.
