Ornate numeral five lettering design
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A hand-drawn ornamental numeral five, outlined in black ink with hatched and stippled dotwork shading across its bowl and top bar. Curling flourishes and thin swash lines radiate around the figure, with small scroll terminals at their ends. The design is shown flat on white paper, with pens, a ruler, a pencil and an eraser placed at the edges of the frame.

You are sixteen the summer the boarding house on Marrow Parade gets a new sign painter, a thin man called Ebenezer Rook who smells of linseed and peppermint. He is hired to redo the numeral over the front door, the brass five that has lost its curls to salt air. He does not paint it. He draws it first, on squared paper at the kitchen table, and your aunt Dot, who runs the place, tells him the guests will not pay for a number they cannot read. He ignores her and goes on with his pens.

Every evening you bring him tea and watch the figure grow. The top bar of the five swells like a banner caught in wind, and he fills it with dots so fine they look like frost on a window. Down the bowl he hatches lines that curl the way the tide does on the shingle at dusk. Thin swash lines leave the numeral and wander off across the page, each one ending in a little scroll, as though the ink had changed its mind about staying put. When you ask why the flourishes don't connect to anything, he says that a five should be allowed to reach for things it hasn't got.
In August a storm takes the roof of the east wing and the sign is nearly lost to the rain. Rook is still there at dawn, drawing with his collar up, because the sheet has blown from the table and he has decided it must be finished before the ink dries on the wind. You hold the corners down with your shoes. When the sun comes up over the harbour he stands back, blinks at the wet page, and says the five looks like it is about to sail away. You tell him that is exactly what he meant, and he laughs, and for once he does not argue.
