Pen and shaded drawing of a Gemini zodiac symbol in a bold, flowing tribal-influenced style, drawn in dark ink on cream paper.

Gemini zodiac symbol design in tribal style

Traditional · Black and grey · Flash

A hand-drawn design of the Gemini zodiac symbol, built from two sweeping curved bars joined by a vertical central stroke, with spiral ends curling outwards. The bold dark outlines are accented with soft pencil or pen shading along the inner edges to give a sense of depth. The design is in dark purple-black ink only, centred on a plain cream sheet of paper.

Dear Brother Edmund, the ink you sent from Lindisfarne was too thin for our vellum, so I have thickened it with soot and oak gall until it sits dark enough to hold a line. Forgive the smell in the scriptorium. You asked after the Hallam twins, and I will answer plainly, since you always said I wrote like a man counting sheep.

Ambrose and Lucan came to us at twelve, two boys with the same grey eyes and no sense of where one ended. Ambrose wrote with his left hand, Lucan with his right, and they shared a single reed pen, passing it across the desk between strokes without looking up. The prior thought it a distraction and parted them in the spring, one to the bell tower to copy the abbey accounts, one to the cellarer's cold room. Within a week neither could finish a word.

It was Brother Oswin who found the drawing. Tucked inside the back board of the Psalter, where the binder keeps his offcuts, was a sheet of cream parchment with a mark inked in purple-black: two long curved bars crossed by a single stroke down the middle, each end curling outward into a spiral, the curls shaded on the inside as if someone had rubbed the lines with a thumb. Both boys swore they had never seen it. Both knew at once who had drawn it.

We sent them back to the same desk at Candlemas. Lucan's shading is softer now and Ambrose presses harder, but when I watched them write this morning the reed passed between them three times without a word, and the spirals in their margins still turn away from each other, as if to make room for the other to rest. I have not told the prior. I think he has seen it too.

Your brother in Christ, Thomas
