The ice on the water trough had to be broken with the heel of a boot, and Ada Pryce did it every morning before the light came up over the lower field. The ewes were scattered that February, and the snow made every count a guess. On the gatepost sat the owl, pale as a folded letter, watching her with the patience of something that had never once been late for anything.

Her grandfather had kept a notebook in the tack room, and she had found it the week after the funeral, wedged behind a tin of raw linseed. Every page was filled with spirals. In the margins he had written what the wind said to him, the names of animals and weather and the days the owl came back, all folded into loops so tight that she had to tilt the pages to the lamp to read them. She had taken it for a farmer's doodling until she saw the same loops cut into the granary door, and then again on the wing of the owl that now watched her from the post.
That night she unlatched the gate to the lower field, the way he used to when he wanted the barn owl to come down and take the mice from the hay. She sat on the upturned bucket with the notebook open on her knee and read the swirls backwards, the way he had taught her to read the weather. They spelt out the ewes, one by one, every name he had ever given them, and beside each, a date.
In the morning the gate stood open and the owl was gone. A single feather lay on the frozen trough, its barbs written over in a hand she knew, and at the bottom of the shaft, in the smallest loop of all, was her own name, counted in.
