The keys hung on a board behind the scullery door at Seacrest, forty-one of them on brass hooks, and every one had a tag in my mother's hand. Number nine was the odd one. It had no tag at all, only a key whose bow was cut into a wing shape, its wards filed into curls so fine you could catch a fingernail on them.

Mr Pellow took room nine every August for eleven summers and never once asked for that key. He came down at seven, read the local paper on the front step, and paid in coins he counted twice. The year the storm took the lower promenade railings, he came to the kitchen door soaked to the knee and asked me, without any preamble, whether the lock on nine still turned the right way.
I told him it did. He nodded as if I'd confirmed a sum, then said his sister had once owned a key just like it, cast at her late husband's foundry near Camborne, and that she had used it to open a tin of letters she was never meant to read. He wanted to know whether I would open nine for him that evening. I did. Inside, the room smelled of salt and lavender, and on the sill sat a brass butterfly the size of a palm, its wings open and its body a key.
He didn't touch it. He looked at it the way you look at a train you have decided not to catch, then pressed a coin into my hand and asked me to keep the room locked for good. I hung the key back on its hook that night, ninth from the left, and I still haven't tagged it.
