The rabbit came up the Hollin shaft every morning before the cage, and nobody could say how it got past the banksman. It sat on the lamp-room step with its long ears folded back, very still, while the men went by with their tins. Dai Pritchard said it had no business being so calm, and his wife said a creature that had lived under six hundred feet of rock was entitled to a little calm.

The ears were the strange part. Every braid in them had been worked by a hand that had counted the stone, the way the old cutters counted seams before they put a pick to a face. The haunches carried small flowers with five petals each, and the men learned to read them. A flower meant the seam ran level. Two flowers meant it dipped. When the roof came down in the north drift in the wet March, the rabbit was sitting on the spoil heap, and it had turned its head to face the sealed fall.

Ifan Rhys had been under it for a night and a day. The rescue men argued about where to dig, and his mother, Nia, walked up to the heap and set a candle down beside the rabbit. It did not move. She took that as the answer. They dug where its eyes pointed, and the seam bent just where two flowers were drawn into its flank, and by the second afternoon they heard tapping.

Ifan came out grey to the eyebrows, still holding a lamp he had not let go of. The rabbit was gone. In the dust of the heap were four small prints and, beside them, five-petalled flowers pressed in with a single claw, one for every seam it had kept.
