Black and grey realism tattoo of a seated rabbit looking upwards, shaded on the lower leg of a person with pale freckled skin.

Seated rabbit on the lower leg

Realism · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A rabbit sits upright and looks up and to the right, with its long ears raised and one ear folded back. The shading is soft and detailed, with fine dark outlines around the body and gradual grey tones across the fur, while the paws and tail are defined by heavier black accents. The tattoo is shown alone against plain skin and a white background, with the subject centred in the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lettuces came through the Dover lanes on a Tuesday, forty crates in a refrigerated lorry, and riding on top of the last one was a grey rabbit sitting bolt upright as if it had been asked to wait for a bus. Nobody had declared it. Pyke wanted it logged as contraband vegetation. I said it was the only thing in the load with any manners, and I carried it into the office in a fruit box lined with my spare jumper.

It kept its head up the whole afternoon. It watched the strip lights, then the ceiling tiles, then the window, where the planes come down low over the Channel. Every few minutes it turned its head to the right, toward the glass, with one ear flat and the other standing as straight as a pen, as though someone on one of those planes had promised to whistle back.

The driver was a quiet man from Ghent who said a girl at a petrol station outside Calais had pressed the box into his hands and asked him to take it to a Mr Dunmore on Cheriton Road, Folkestone, because his hutch was waiting. There was a name written on the lid in biro, and a phone number that rang out. I spent my lunch breaks ringing it, and by Thursday I had stopped expecting an answer and simply drove the box over myself.

The hutch was in a back garden overgrown with bindweed, its wire door hanging open. I set the box on the step. The rabbit climbed out, sat up on the flagstones, lifted its head to the grey sky and held it there, ears high, looking past the roofs toward the sea as though it had only ever been waiting for the view.
