Rabbit and blackberries on an upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A brown rabbit with a white-ringed eye and soft, shaded fur sits at the centre of a circular wreath. Blackberries in purple and green, rosemary sprigs, and orange and brown leaves frame the rabbit, with a fine dotted arc behind its head. The shading is soft and detailed on the rabbit, while the plants use bold outlines and warm and cool colour, and the design sits centrally on the upper arm.

She knew it was the rabbit. A brown doe with one white-ringed eye had been living under the rosemary by the water butt since spring, and Mr Pryce had threatened her with a wire snare twice. Nell sat on an upturned bucket with her back to the shed and waited, her knees cold through her jeans, until the grass parted and the animal came out, nose working, to test the air.
Nell didn't move. The rabbit hopped to the wall, reached up with neat paws, and pulled down one cluster of berries. She sat back and chewed it with great seriousness. Nell laughed out loud. The rabbit froze, ears up, and then, rather than running, dropped the last berry at Nell's boot and looked at her with the same patience the postmistress used on people who bought stamps for the wrong country.
Next morning there was a wreath on the gatepost: rosemary bound with couch grass, a few blackberries pressed into the gaps, and a curl of orange chanterelle tucked in like a bow. Nell took it home and hung it on the kitchen door. Mrs Acland stopped in the lane to look at it, sniffed, and said only that the rabbit had always been cleverer than the men with the snares.
