Lotus mandala across upper back
Dotwork · Back · Mixed · Photo
A symmetrical lotus mandala fills the upper back, with layered petals, scrolled edges and a central bud framed by a circular band. The shading is built from stippled dots and clean outlines, giving the petals soft grey gradients. Small red accents on the inner buds are the only colour, and the design is centred on the spine.

The mule will not take the last switchback, so you unload the salt yourself, sack by sack, while the wind drags the prayer flags flat against their poles like wet washing. By the time you reach the shrine at Sorrel Col, the wind has found every seam of your coat and the grit has got into the stitching of the sacks.

Old Dorje is already there, kneeling at a chorten wall with a bronze chisel and a bowl of soot ink. He isn't carving the stone so much as bruising it. Each petal is outlined in one hard line, then filled with a rain of tiny dots, dense at the rim and thinning toward the heart, until the granite turns soft and grey as dusk on snow. "A lotus grows out of mud," he says, without looking up. "The bud is the last part to open, so it's the first thing you finish."
He sets a butter lamp in the central niche, the bud framed inside a ring of scrolled cloud. When he dips a fine brush in madder and touches the two inner petals, the red looks almost wet. You ask who the mandala is for. He says the pass takes two or three people every winter, and the lamp needs someone to keep it lit from the valley side.
You don't answer. You hand him the last sack, take the lamp, and carry it down the path with your cupped hand round its flame, the cold ground blue beneath you, the red bud still burning when you reach the first juniper and look back at the shrine.
