Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A symmetrical ornamental design of curling filigree scrollwork and lace-like panels covers the upper arm and reaches towards the shoulder. The linework is dark and bold at the top and fades into lighter grey shading and soft outlines towards the bottom edge. The design is shown in black and grey against pale skin, with a black and white striped top at the left edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The lace merchant's daughter came down to the harbour market on the first wet morning of the year, carrying a basket of iron filigree that her father had spent a winter hammering into curls. Nobody bought it. The fishwives said it was too fine to survive the salt, and the rain kept the gulls on the eaves and the buyers under their awnings. She sat on an upturned crate and let the drizzle gather on the scrollwork until it beaded and ran down in thin silver lines.

A ferryman's widow stopped beside her, shaking out a striped shawl. She looked at the iron for a long time and then asked what it was meant to hold. The girl said nothing. Her father had never told her. The widow said that in her grandmother's village they made such panels to hang over a door, so that rain running down them would fall away from the threshold, and the house inside would stay dry however hard the weather pressed.
The girl took the widow's shawl and laid it over the basket, then carried the whole thing home along the quay, the water finding its way down every curl. By evening the panels were hung over her father's door, and the rain ran off them in neat sheets onto the cobbles. He came out to look, and stood a while in the wet, and did not say the iron was too fine. He only went back inside and fetched a second hammer.
