Black lace and pearl ornament on upper arm and shoulder
Dotwork · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo
A large black ornamental design covers the shoulder cap and upper arm, with lace-like openwork patterns and a chain of dotted beads. Several round jewel-like shapes are shaded in grey, with one darker blue stone near the top left edge. The work is almost entirely black and grey ink, and the composition wraps over the shoulder toward the upper arm.

Mother Hesketh had her pillow on her knees before the church bell struck five, and she did not stop for the bell. Her thread was linen so fine that candle smoke could dull it. Each bobbin had a name burned into its top: Anne, Sorrow, Little Tom, Sunday. She pricked the pattern into the card with a pin, and the lace grew out of her fingers the way frost grows across a pane, one small hole at a time.

The squire's wife came in February carrying a pearl necklace with its clasp snapped, the strands knotted together in a twist of silk. She wanted the yoke of her gown finished for a wedding at Lady Day. 'Sew them in,' she said. 'Every one.' Mother Hesketh counted forty-one pearls and one blue glass stone the colour of a kingfisher's back, which had come off a brooch. She set the pearls into a fan of openwork at the shoulder, the holes between them as open as a net, and the lace fell down the arm like water over a weir.
The wedding was put off, then put off again, and the squire's wife never came back for the gown. Mother Hesketh let the pillow lie. In spring the blackthorn came out, and she took the work up again only to finish the border, and in finishing it she found she had made something she could not sell. The blue stone sat at the top edge where the light caught it first.
When her granddaughter asked why she still added a bead to the border every Sunday, the old woman rolled the pillow into its cloth and tied the cord. 'Nobody has told me to stop,' she said, and she went back to the window.
