Ouija planchette and roses design
Neo-trad · Colour · Flash
A coloured drawing of a pale hand with long nails lifting a wooden planchette that shows an eye and the word OUIJA. Two large roses, one purple and one pink, with green leaves frame the hand against a teal background with faint geometric lines. Bold dark outlines, smooth colour fills and soft shading give the design a neo-traditional look, and the piece is photographed lying on a fluffy grey surface.

Dear Nell, the board came down from the attic at Hafod Pass the night the snow shut the road, and Mrs Pritchard set it on the kitchen table as if it were a pie. You know how I hate these games. Still, there were six of us stuck in that inn with nothing but the peat fire and the drovers' ledger, so I sat.

The planchette was a wooden teardrop, its varnish gone the colour of strong tea, with an eye painted in the middle that seemed to follow the lamp. Tom the carrier rested two fingers on it and the pointer shivered before it moved. It spelled out the names of every drover who had died crossing the pass since 1861. Nobody laughed. Then it stopped at a name I knew, Evan Lloyd, our father's cousin, who we were told had gone south to Cardiff and never written.
Mrs Pritchard asked where he was. The planchette slid across the board to the window and held there, pointing at the black glass. When we looked, the snow had stopped, and a lantern was moving up the track with a man walking behind it, one hand raised as if to lift a latch. I did not look away. Tom swore and took his fingers off, and the wood went cold as a stone.
The man was at the door by morning. He was no ghost, only a drover's son who had been sheltering in the chapel barn, and he knew our Evan well enough to say he had died on the Cardiff docks, not on the pass. I have kept the board in my case. Do not come up in February, and do not let anyone lay a hand on it. Your loving sister, Gwen.
